Guenda Goria: “Suffering from endometriosis has changed me psychologically”

Pelvic pain, extremely heavy periods, headache and associated mood disorders. Endometriosis is one of the most disabling pathologies for women who are affected by it, especially for its symptoms. In Italy, they suffer from it about 3 million women, (150 million worldwide), but with an estimated diagnostic delay of about 10 years. There are women whose level of pathology is such that they have to face the surgery, and among these is the actress Guenda Goria, 32 years old – daughter of Maria Teresa Ruta and Amedeo Gori – who recently underwent endometriosis surgery, as she told herself with a post on Instagram:

How did you notice and what impact did the diagnosis have on you?
“There are women who perceive it as a rebirth because they finally feel understood and others as a condemnation. Yes, I haven’t discovered it in a long time. I began to warn disabling and excessive pains during your period, as well as to live intimate relationships with detachment given the pain they caused me. I had a gynecological examination and found out I have a cyst. When I went to the pharmacy to start a treatment
hormonal the pharmacist advised me not to take endometriosis lightly because her daughter was one sliced. From there I began to inquire and I realized that I too suffered from it. I decided to turn to a great specialist in the field, Professor Massimo Candiani, head of the Gynecology and Obstetrics Unit of the IRCCS San Raffaele Hospital in Milan, and finally I was able to confront a doctor who understood how I felt. It was he who suggested the operation because mine was a fairly complex situation and had to be stopped with the operation, although it is important to reiterate that it is a disease that cannot be cured. Many think that the operation is the end of all problems but unfortunately this is not the case. Not all doctors know this pathology and the possible consequences it has on us women, therefore it is very important to contact an endometriosis specialist and not just any gynecologist ».

How do you live your relationship with the disease?
“It changed me psychologically, that’s undeniable. It leaves you with open wounds that are also important to work on through deep introspection and work on ourselves. On the one hand I am less enthusiastic and I always have small or big annoyances. But it is also a daily lesson because I appreciate the good times, when I feel good and I enjoy the things that really have value. Before, I didn’t realize I was leaving behind aspects of my life that I shouldn’t have underestimated ».

What does the operation consist of? Did you find humanity and tact on the part of the doctors and the team in dealing with the subject?
I operated on for a endometrioma, that is to say a large endometriotic cyst. AND
a dedicated operation because cysts of this type adhere to the walls of the ovaries. I have also been
also checked other organs, especially the intestine, to make sure there were no others
outbreaks. Endometriosis unfortunately can affect various organs and for this reason it is important to diagnose it in
weather. There is an average delay in the diagnosis of this pathology of ten years ».

What are the most disabling symptoms?
“First of all a chronic fatigue, there are days when I couldn’t get out of bed. Pain
sudden, swelling in the abdomen, but mostly affects intimacy. The fact of not feeling comfortable in the
one’s body is invalidated ‘.

Are you continuing to take therapy?
“Of course. I’m in forced menopause. I can’t have a period so I’m going through hormonal therapy ».
