The Pan’s Labyrinth is one of the most acclaimed films by Mexican director Guillermo del Toro. It even won the statuettes for Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction, and Best Makeup at the Oscars. In addition, she was nominated for the Golden Globes, Goya Awards, BAFTA Awards, Ariel Awards, among others.
Despite its popularity and box office success, del Toro has confessed that he was about to not release the film because he considered it “unpresentable.” Fortunately, his friend, also a Mexican director, Alfonso Cuarón made him change his mind.
In an interview for the YouTube channel #0 by Movistar Plus+, the director said that he was about to not launch The Pan’s Labyrinth, because he believed that the film lacked certain elements that would guarantee success.
Del Toro shared that he was at the airport when he decided to contact his friend Alfonso Cuarón so that he could see the film and give him his opinion before it was shown, obtaining an incredible and unimaginable response.

‘Pan’s Labyrinth’, I clearly remember at the airport talking to Cuarón in New York, I say to him: ‘Alfonso, are you in New York?’, he says ‘yes’. I got off the flight with the film’s hard drive and told him: ‘I’m going to show you a film because it’s unpresentable.’
I go with the hard drive to the SoHo Hotel, I connect it to the TV, I go down to the lobby. I go up and Alfonso is crying and I tell him: ‘It’s terrible, you’re crying from…’. He tells me: ‘Gordo, she’s great, you’re crazy’.
His friend’s opinion gave del Toro the security he needed to screen his film, and the result was a wave of success, awards, and recognition of his talent and creativity.
It is worth mentioning that this anecdote was told by the director in 2015. However, recently it has gone viral due to his most recent success with the film Pinocchio: By Guillermo del Toro.
