Gunman was tied up by worshipers after killing a person in church in California

A gunman opened fire at a Southern California church during lunch on Sunday, killing one person and wounding five, before worshipers detained the suspect and tied his legs with an electrical cord, officials said.

Police responded to the incident that unfolded around 1:30 pm local time at the Geneva Presbyterian Church in Laguna Woods and arrested an unidentified suspect in his 60s, Orange County Deputy Sheriff Jeff Hallock told a news conference. .

“That group of believers showed exceptional heroism and bravery in intervening to detain the suspect. They undoubtedly avoided further injuries and deaths,” he said.

One person died at the scene, while four other victims were seriously injured. Another person suffered minor injuries, he said. All the injured were taken to hospitals.

“At this point, we don’t know what the suspect’s motive might be or if he had an intended target, or if this is even a hate-related incident,” Hallock said, adding that authorities believe the suspect does not live in the area.

Two pistols were found at the scene.

“No one should be afraid to go to their place of worship. Our thoughts are with the victims, the community and everyone affected by this tragic event,” Governor Gavin Newsom’s office said on Twitter.
