Police are responding to a shooting call in downtown Highland Park, Illinois, in the area where a July 4th parade was taking place, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office said Monday.
The city of Highland Park, a suburb about 40 kilometers north of Chicago, reported that the Independence Day parade was canceled and advised people to avoid the venue.
A witness, Miles Zaremski, claimed he heard what he believed to be 20 to 25 shots. he pointed to CNN who saw at least one person bloodied and on the ground.
It was expected to feature floats, marching bands, community groups and other special entertainment, the city said on its website.
The festivities were scheduled to begin at 10:00 am (local time) at the intersection of Laurel and St. Johns, and was to head north on St. Johns Avenue and then west on Central Avenue and continue to Sunset Park.
