Guterres: Communication with Putin on Ukraine – “Peace is still far away”

The Secretary of the United Nations Antonio Guterres had telephone contact with him Vladimir Putin with the main subject of war in Ukrainewhile the former emphasized that the scenario for peace to prevail is far away.

Russian President Vladimir Putin had a telephone conversation today with the Secretary General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, with whom he discussed the agreement on the export of Ukrainian grain, as well as Russian food and fertilizers through the Black Sea.

“I believe that peace is essential – peace as defined by the UN Charter and international law. Nevertheless it would be a lie if i said i hope it happens soon“, he characteristically said.

At the same time, according to the Kremlin, “the implementation of the Istanbul agreements on the export of Ukrainian grain” was discussed. Putin insisted that Ukrainian grain should be destined “as a matter of priority” to the regions of the world most in need, particularly Africa, the Middle East and Latin America.

The Russian president also welcomed the “constructive” cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), whose experts have been since the beginning of the month at the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine, which has been seized by Russian forces.

Guterres expressed hope that the agreement to export grain from Ukraine’s Black Sea ports would not only continue to be implemented, but would be extended to begin exporting Russian ammonia as well. “It is essential to remove the obstacles that still exist in relation to the export of Russian fertilizers,” the UN chief told reporters after his talk with Putin.
