Guterres condemns attack on blue-collar workers – ‘May constitute serious crimes under international law’

Its Secretary General United Nations Organization, Antonio Guterres“condemned” yesterday Friday (18/8) the “unacceptable” attack by Turkish Cypriots against blue-collar workerswhere “may constitute serious crimes under international law”according to a press release issued in New York by his representative Stephane Dujarric.

The UN Secretary General “condemns the attack” that took place yesterday “by Turkish Cypriot security personnel” and resulted in “injuries” of UNFICYP blue-collar workers in the dead zone near Pylathe text says.

Mr. Guterres “emphasizes that threats to the security of UN peacekeepers and damage to UN property are unacceptable and may constitute serious crimes under international law,” the statement continued.

The UN Secretary-General calls on the Turkish Cypriot side to “respect” the authority of UNFICYP and to “immediately” withdraw its personnel and machinery “from the neutral zone”.

The UNFICYP members attacked by Turkish Cypriot police were British and Slovak blue-collar workers.

The episode was condemned by the EU, as well as Britain, the US and France, which expressed “concern” about the arbitrary works in a joint statement.

French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna expressed Paris’ “strong concern” during a telephone conversation with her Turkish counterpart Hakan Fidan.
