The commitment “to never forget, nor let others forget, the truth about what happened”, expresses the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in his message for today's International Day of Remembrance of the Victims Holocaust. It also appeals to “never be silent in the face of discrimination, never tolerate intolerance” and “to speak openly about the human rights and dignity of all”, but also “to never forget each other's humanity and let's never let our guard down.”
Crystallizing his message, he clearly proclaims to all who face prejudice and persecution: “you are not alone”, the United Nations is with you.
Speaking about this year's world day, the secretary general points out that “today we pause to mourn the six million Jewish children, women and men who were systematically murdered by the Nazis and their collaborators” and notes: “We mourn the Roma and Cindy, for the disabled and so many others who were persecuted and murdered in the Holocaust. We honor their memory. We stand with the survivors, their families and their descendants.”
At the same time, Mr Antonio Guterres recognizes the “tremendous significance” of this Remembrance Day in today's times and adds: “The anti-Semitic hatred that fueled the Holocaust did not begin with the Nazis, nor did it end with their defeat. Today, we are witnessing the spread of hatred at an alarming rate. On the internet, hate has moved from the fringes to the norm. But, today more than ever, we must remember that demonizing the other and disregarding diversity is a danger to all. That no society is immune from intolerance. Bigotry against one group is bigotry against all of us. As the former Chief Rabbi of the United Kingdom, Jonathan Sacks, so memorably said: “Hate that begins with the Jews, never ends with the Jews.”
Finally, he refers to the “heinous terrorist attacks of October 7 by Hamas,” stressing the need to “resolve to stand tall” against the forces of hatred and division. “We must condemn anti-Semitism unequivocally, whenever and wherever we encounter it, just as we must condemn all forms of racism, prejudice and religious intolerance, including anti-Muslim hatred and violence against minority Christian communities,” he concludes.
