“Germany is not opposed to an oil embargo from Russia,” German Deputy Chancellor and Economy and Climate Protection Minister Robert Habeck said in Brussels today as he approached the EU’s emergency energy council.
“After two months of work, I can say that Germany is not opposed to an oil embargo from Russia. It’s a big burden, but we are ready to lift it,” said Habek. He explained that Germany was heavily dependent on Russian oil before the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which accounted for 35% of imports, but today managed to reduce it to 12%.
Mr Habeck said there was now only one refinery in Germany running on Russian oil. He noted that if an oil embargo came and we did not have enough time to solve it, the problem would be local in Germany, but it would not hit the national economy as a whole.
Asked if he was in favor of a gradual embargo on Russian oil, Mr Habeck said: “We need a few weeks and months to do all the technical preparations,” noting that “time helps”.
Finally, the German Vice Chancellor pointed out that other countries in the EU have a much bigger problem of dependence on Russian oil and stressed that this is something that must be recognized and there must be solidarity.
