Hacker who hacked Raydium protocol moved 1774.5 ETH to Tornado Cash mixer

Cybersecurity specialists from CertiK reported that an unknown person who hacked the Raydium protocol sent 1774.5 stolen ethers to the Tornado Cash mixer.

Now the total amount of transferred ethers is about $2.7 million. The attack on the Raydium DeFi protocol running on the Solana blockchain took place on the night of December 16th. The hackers managed to withdraw funds from USDC, wSOL and Raydium liquidity pools. Later, the developers of the protocol reported that the exploit was related to a vulnerability in smart contracts. The Raydium team has offered a compensation plan to users affected by the hack. The plan involves using funds from the protocol fund to purchase missing crypto assets and repair damages.

Despite the fact that security specialists of various crypto exchanges continue to fight against hackers, the attackers were still able to transfer the stolen crypto assets to Tornado Cash. In May 2022, this service was blacklisted by the US Department of the Treasury for facilitating the laundering of stolen cryptocurrencies.

According to a recent report from Chainalysis, an analytics company, the sanctions have had a chilling effect on the operation of the cryptocurrency mixer. However, even if the Tornado website is closed, its smart contracts can continue to function, which means that anyone can use the mixer at any time.

Hackers who keep moving embezzled funds don’t always get the job done. Recently, cryptocurrency exchanges Binance and Huobi were able to freeze funds stolen in June from the Harmony One project.
