Hackers announced the distribution of 5,000 BTC and 50,000 ETH on behalf of MicroStrategy

The hackers hacked into the Twitter account of the Nigerian Business Day news outlet Nigerian Business Day, and then published information about the distribution of BTC and ETH on behalf of MicroStrategy CEO Michael Saylor.

According to tweets from a compromised Nigerian Business Day account with over 89,000 followers, MicroStrategy management allegedly announced a giveaway of 5,000 BTC and 50,000 ETH. The attackers stated that interested users should send between 0.1 and 20 BTC or between 0.5 and 200 ETH to a specified donation address, promising to send them double the amount in return.

In addition, the hackers published these messages as comments on tweets of the Binance and KuCoin cryptocurrency exchanges, as well as under the publications of Tesla CEO Elon Musk, in order to expand the reach of the audience. However, the attackers’ attempts to appropriate other people’s crypto assets were unsuccessful – they managed to lure only 0.06 ETH ($104) from users.

Recently, there has been a massive surge in scam activity on social media. They often pose as influencers in the cryptocurrency industry. For example, recently, attackers tried to deceive the owners of cryptocurrency projects using a deepfake, trying to impersonate the director of public relations of Binance Patrick Hillmann (Patrick Hillmann).

Recall that in 2020, scammers committed a massive hacking of Twitter accounts belonging to the founders of large trading platforms and famous personalities, including Bill Gates, Elon Musk and Michael Bloomberg. Attackers published messages from these accounts about the distribution of 5,000 bitcoins.
