Members of the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) community have suffered an attack by intruders who entered the Discord channel through a PR manager account.
BAYC Team informed on Twitter about a phishing attack on the project: the Discord server became the target of hacking. Unknown persons, using an exploit, stole non-fungible tokens (NFTs) in the amount of 200 ethers (about $340,000).
“The team quickly noticed the break-in and fixed it. We’re still investigating, but if you’re affected, please email us at [email protected].
The BAYC team lamented that the centralized Discord messenger servers do not provide security for Web3 projects:
“We need the best platform that puts safety first.”
Blockchain Security Specialist OKHotshot explained cyber attack algorithm. According to him, the hackers hacked into the account of YugaLabs project public relations manager Boris Vagner and compromised BAYC through his account. The expert added that improving the system could prevent similar incidents in the future.
In May 2022, BAYC holders were hit by a sharp drop in NFT prices of more than 60%, a bearish trend in the cryptocurrency market, and the collapse of Terra. Another cyber attack caused panic among BAYC NFT users, which caused panic in the community. Some users have expressed the need to immediately eliminate exploits and increase the security level of the project.
In May, Hollywood star Seth Green was hit by a hacker attack in which
the attackers stole four NFTs from the Bored Ape Yacht Club, Mutant Ape Yacht Club and Doodles collections.
