Hackers Hacked YouTube Channel of South Korean Authorities to Advertise Cryptocurrency with Elon Musk

More than half a million subscribers of the YouTube channel of the South Korean Ministry of Culture, instead of a government video, saw an American billionaire talking about cryptocurrencies.

The hackers renamed the ministry’s YouTube channel SpaceX Invest. Then the organizers of the hack launched a fake video on the channel with Tesla CEO Elon Musk talking about investing in cryptocurrencies. The South Korean Ministry of Culture and Tourism (KTO), which owns the YouTube account, said the account was restored within four hours and the scammers’ broadcasts stopped.

KTO reported that the scammers tried to hack into the account twice. The first attack, organized on September 1, was successfully localized by the cybersecurity service. A second attack on 3 September was briefly successful. YouTube and Google confirmed the compromise of the official channel. Google Korea has announced that it is currently investigating the cause of the incident.

Preliminary version of the hack of the government channel – a compromise of the account and password of the YouTube channel owned by KTO. As evidence of the hack, a screenshot is provided with Mask speaking and the channel renamed.

The ministry noted that Google automatically blocks access to an account if it detects unauthorized connections. Musk has yet to respond to reports that his image was used in the hack.

Cyber attacks on government channels are nothing new. In 2021, cybercriminals hacked into the personal Twitter account of the head of the Indian government. On his behalf, the hackers announced the recognition of bitcoin by the authorities of the country and the distribution of 500 BTC.
