A few days ago, the developers of Optimism accidentally handed over 20 million OP tokens to hackers, which were intended for the market maker Wintermute. The hackers decided to return most of the funds.
On May 26, Optimism developers sent 20 million OP tokens to the Wintermute smart contract address. However, they did this in their own second layer solution, and used the smart contract address on the first layer of Ethereum. Thus, the tokens “hung” in the air.
The hackers who discovered this managed to launch their own smart contract on this address and gained access to the tokens. They immediately sold 1 million tokens, and sent another 1 million OP to the wallet of Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin. Of the remaining 18 million tokens, they decided to return 17 million to Optimism developers
“The developers of Optimism can get back to building and expanding the ecosystem. The person who discovered the problem put on a “white hat” and set a good precedent for the entire cryptocurrency community. And we can now fully focus on providing liquidity for the OP token!” said a spokesperson for Wintermute.
Recall that at the beginning of the month, Optimism developers began distributing OP tokens to active users and community members. After that, network failures were recorded.
