Hackers hacked the Bitrue crypto exchange and stole $23 million worth of cryptocurrency. The platform said that on the morning of April 14, it detected an attack on its “hot” wallet and stopped it, preventing the loss of even more funds. Writes about it RBC Crypto.
The exchange explained that the attackers were able to withdraw assets in Ethereum (ETH), Shiba Inu (SHIB), Quant (QNT), GALA (GALA), Holo (HOT) and Polygon (MATIC) from a wallet that held less than 5% of the total amount of funds. Other platform wallets were not affected.
Bitrue is a Singapore-based centralized crypto exchange founded in 2018. It features 536 cryptocurrencies and 1085 trading pairs. According to CoinGecko, the trading volume on the site over the past day amounted to $1.9 billion.
Centralized crypto exchanges often use a combination of cold (offline) and hot (internet connected) wallets to hold user funds. The former provide greater security, while the latter allow you to quickly conduct transactions, but are more vulnerable to hacks, so they usually store a small part of the funds.
Bitrue has temporarily suspended the ability to withdraw funds and plans to restore it on April 18th. Users affected by the incident will receive a full refund, the exchange said.
On April 9, hackers hacked into the South Korean exchange GDAC and stole about $14 million in cryptocurrencies (at the exchange rates at the time of the theft). The platform has suspended deposit and withdrawal functions. On April 13, GDAC announced that all user funds are safe, but it may take about two more weeks before the resumption of deposits and the possibility of withdrawing assets.
