Hackers stole about $ 244 million in May

In May 2025, the cryptosector was subjected to at least 20 large attacks, which led to losses worth about $ 244.1 million. This is 39.29% less than in April, experts of the PeckShield analytical platform said.

According to analysts, the largest losses in April became:

  • Cetus Protocol – $ 220 million. The Cetus decentralized exchange based on the SUI blockchain suffered from the attack on May 22. General losses are estimated at $ 220 million, of which a significant part was frozen. After hacking, many tokens on the basis of SUI lost more than 80% of their value;
  • Cork Protocol – $ 12 million. The attacker launched a malicious smart contract and after 16 minutes took advantage of vulnerability, withdrawing 3761.87 Wsteth. The received assets were immediately converted into Ethereum;
  • The attack associated with the DPRK is $ 5.2 million;
  • The incident with the MBU token – $ 2.2 million. In this case, the hacker began the attack only two minutes after the deployment of a malicious contract. The target of the Mobius Token team became the target. For a short period of time, the attacker spent a series of transactions with which he withdrew all the available funds from him;
  • Maplestoryu – $ 1.2 million.

Analysts noted that thanks to the measures of Cetus and the SUI network, more than 71% of the stolen assets were frozen, namely $ 157 million out of $ 220 million.

Note that the total losses from cryptocurrency hacks in the first quarter of 2025 amounted to more than $ 1.93 billion.

Also in May, Cyvers analysts reported about 2.6 million USDT as a result of an attack that was based on the Spam-Transoning technique. Attackers used transfers with a zero value to mislead the user and force him to send funds to the wrong address.
