The hackers were able to gain access to the wallet of the New Zealand police, where bitcoins were stored in order to investigate the drug sale.
Bitcoins were supposed to be used by law enforcement to control drug purchases. However, the hackers somehow obtained the secret keys and brought the cryptocurrency to their addresses.
The amount of the loss for the police is not too large – about $ 32,000. That is, the attackers stole only one bitcoin. At the moment, the identity of the hackers has not been established.
However, Stuart Mills, an inspector for the National Organized Crime Unit of the New Zealand Police Force, said the attackers were likely “from overseas.”
Mills noted that the hack “was part of a larger scam aimed at obtaining keys to bitcoin wallets.” Police are continuing to investigate the incident.
Recall that at the end of 2019, the New Zealand police confiscated $ 4.2 million in cryptocurrencies from the owner of sites for the distribution of pirated films.
