Haddad and Marina go to Davos in the midst of a complex geopolitical scenario and after attacks in Brasília

The Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad, and the Minister of the Environment, Marina Silva, will participate in the World Economic Forum, in Davos, Switzerland, starting next week, in an event that takes place in the face of the most complex geopolitical scenario in decades , in the words of the organizers themselves.

The Brazilian delegation also arrives at the event with international actors perplexed by the attacks in Brasília, which had global repercussions. Attention will be focused on the first speeches by members of the new government at an international event, after Lula’s inauguration and vandalism in the federal capital.

In a pre-press conference held with journalists who will cover the event this week, the president of the World Economic Forum, Borge Brende, highlighted the presence of Brazilian ministers. “Despite the recent terrible events in Brasilia, we will have a strong Brazilian ministerial delegation, headed by the Minister of Finance. We will also have the presence of Marina Silva, back with us, who was once Minister of the Environment and will be Minister again, sending strong signals about the Amazon”, said Brende.

The secretary of International Affairs of the Ministry of Finance, Tatiana Rosito, will also participate in the event.

The economic team confirmed that the Brazilian delegation leaves the country on Sunday, arrives in Davos on Monday (16), and on Tuesday (17) Haddad participates in an intense agenda of bilateral meetings, in addition to a debate on Brazil . On Wednesday (18), the minister has another full day on his agenda, with an open meeting for the press in the morning and another debate on Latin America in the afternoon.

According to the press office at the Treasury, the presence of the Brazilian government was strongly requested in Davos and several invitations to bilateral meetings were received. Requests even increased after the events in Brasilia, with representatives of international organizations and event organizers “shocked” by recent events and seeking to show solidarity with the Brazilian government.

Brazilian businessmen and bankers such as Luiz Carlos Trabuco, chairman of the board of directors of Bradesco, Milton Maluhy, CEO of Itaú, and Flávio Souza, president of Itaú BBA, will also be present in Davos.

This year’s forum returns to its usual time in mid-January, after being postponed from January to May in 2021 because of Covid-19, which led to lower attendance by authorities last year. The conference starts on Monday (16) and runs until Friday (20).

The main theme of the conference will be: “Cooperation in a fragmented world”. Another subject strongly present will be the concern with climate change, in the midst of the storms that flood California and one of the worst energy crises in the history of Europe.

More than 2,700 politicians, executives, investors, bankers and academics will gather in Davos, which takes place again this winter after nearly three years. The conference will have a record attendance of at least 52 heads of state, more than half of them from Europe, and around 300 government ministers.

Newly elected leaders will attend the event for the first time, including President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. of the Philippines, President Gustavo Petro of Colombia and President Yoon Suk Yeol of South Korea. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is the only leader of the G7 countries who will attend.

Important economic authorities will also be present, such as the president of the European Central Bank, Christine Lagarde, the director of the International Monetary Fund, Kristalina Georgieva.
