Haddad gains strength for Ministry of Finance, say transition group sources

The name of Fernando Haddad is highly quoted among the PT government’s options for the future Ministry of Finance, say sources linked to the working group on the economy at CNN 🇧🇷

President-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has consulted interlocutors about Haddad’s name to gather impressions.

Although Lula does not open the game about his preferences, nor to people close to him, questions about Haddad have led allies to assess that the former Minister of Education is a strong candidate for the portfolio.

The fact that Lula has hardened his speech in relation to the market also leads sources close to the president to believe that names like Henrique Meirelles and Pérsio Arida have lost strength in the betting market.

Among participants in the new government’s transition group, it is clear that Lula’s intention would indeed be to indicate a political name to the Treasury, rather than a technical one. The president-elect does not want his government to be a “hostage” of the market and the more liberal wing of economists, which could happen if a toucan economist or one of the fathers of the Real Plan were appointed.

In any case, interlocutors say that Lula remains very “enigmatic” about the name for the economy and still does not have a defined decision.
