Her strong man Eastern Libya, Marshal Caliph Haftar, paved the way today for his candidacy for the presidency of the country, in the elections that will probably be held in December, announcing that he is temporarily resigning from his military duties.
Haftar is the head of the so-called Libyan National Army (LNA), based in Benghazi, and two years ago launched an attack to occupy the capital Tripoli, but was repulsed after a 14-month siege, reports APE BPE.
In its announcement, the LNA now states that Haftar has entrusted his chief of staff with the tasks for the next three months.
Specifically, his departure will be valid until December 24, on the day the elections are scheduled to take place.
Two weeks ago, a controversial electoral law was passed in Libya – as reported by international news agencies – which allows to run for the presidency and return to his previous position if not elected.
