Hagia Sophia: Investigation into the vandalism after the uproar caused

The images of destruction from the Hagia Sophia Imperial Gate have provoked strong reactions. The General Directorate of Institutions announced that an investigation has been launched to find those responsible, according to a response from ERT from Istanbul. Two administrative and technical inspectors were appointed to conduct the investigation.

As of today, a special folding dam was placed in front of the historic wooden double-leaf gate 7 meters high.

The regional director of the Istanbul Foundations, Hirullah Celebi, said that those who caused damage to the door would be identified and the necessary procedures would be initiated.

“THE Hagia Sophia “She is the daughter of our eyes,” he said, adding that the maintenance team would repair the damage. He also mentioned that a piece of wood of the same type from Italy is expected for the oak door. “More than 20,000 people visit Hagia Sophia every day. “There are 170 cameras in Hagia Sophia and it is guarded during the day by private security and police with politicians,” Celebi said.

It is noted that the UNESCO World Heritage Committee last year gave Turkey until February 1, 2022 to submit an updated report on the changes made in Hagia Sophia and the Monastery of Chora. It is unknown at this time what he will do after leaving the post.

Stating that it was “deeply concerned” about the consequences of the conversion of Hagia Sophia into a mosque, the Commission had also expressed its deep regret that Turkey had not informed the Commission of its intention to change the status of the Hagia Sophia and the Chora Monastery. , and that he did not engage in dialogue with the Commission.

The Commission, which reviewed the list of World Heritage Sites at its annual meeting in China in 2021, had warned that changes to the Hagia Sophia and the Monastery of Chora could affect the Extraordinary Ecumenical Value of these monuments and had called for Turkey to participate in international dialogue and cooperation before making significant changes to these buildings.
