Haiti: At least 6 dead in small passenger plane crash near capital

At least six people were killed Wednesday in Haiti when a small plane crashed in the Carrefour community near the capital, Port-au-Prince.

The plane was en route from the capital to Jacqueline (south), Carrefour police officer Pierre Bellamy Samdi told AFP.

The five occupants of the plane, including its pilot, were killed.

The bomber struck shortly after noon in front of a crowd of 5,000, killing at least five people and wounding five others, according to Judge Moise Jean.

The injured were taken to hospitals.

Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry tweeted “deep sorrow” over the tragic accident and “his (s) condolences to the families of the victims”.

Small passenger airliners have been on the rise in Haiti since last year as safe road transport south became virtually impossible due to gang clashes in the Martisan district of Port-au-Prince, the only road in this direction.
