Haiti: Eight Turkish aid workers abducted in Port-au-Prince

A group of people, including eight Turkish nationals working for a humanitarian organization, were abducted Sunday in Haiti, where they arrived by bus from the Dominican Republic, according to media reports from both countries.

The honorary consul of Turkey in Haiti confirmed that the eight Turks were abducted by a gang on Sunday afternoon. “As they disembarked from the bus, they had time to contact their organization,” said Ig Josue. “There are eight of them working with an education promotion organization,” added the honorary consul, who was unable to say which organization it was.

The abduction took place near Croix-de-Bouquet, where Canadian and American citizens abducted members of a mission last year.

The bus was also carrying Haitian passengers, while the driver was a Dominican, according to the newspaper Listin Diario.

An Haitian police spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

A Dominican diplomat was released last week after being abducted on his way home.

Gangs in Haiti have become increasingly powerful following the assassination of President Jouvenel Moyes last year. At least 75 people were killed two weeks ago in a gang war near the capital, Port-au-Prince, according to the UN office in the country.
