Gunmen tried to assassinate Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry during a rally Saturday to mark the anniversary of the country’s independence, his office said today.
According to the source, “gangs and terrorists” tried to shoot the prime minister in a church in the city of Gonev, in northern Haiti, while the ceremony was underway for the 218th anniversary of independence.
Local media reported that one person was killed and two were injured in the fire. Police were unable to confirm this report.
The prime minister’s office said arrest warrants had been issued for the suspects who shot Henry’s motorcade.
The attack raises concerns about the safety of officials in Haiti, which has plunged into political turmoil following the assassination of President Jouvenel Moyes last July. Henry took over as prime minister shortly afterwards. No presidential election has yet been called to elect Moise’s successor.
