Three people have been shot dead since Monday in protests in Haiti, according to a protest organizer and police, as a movement demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Ariel Henri spreads to several cities in the country.
Since Monday, roadblocks have been set up on the main thoroughfares of southern Haiti, and public transport and shops have stopped operating. The protesters are mainly complaining about fuel shortages and insecurity.
A protester was killed on Monday in the capital Port-au-Prince by unknown assailants who opened fire on the crowd, according to Serge Jean-Louis, an opponent of Ariel Henri and an organizer of the demonstration.
“This is a serious attack on the freedom to hold demonstrations in the country. A man was killed for (demanding) better living conditions in the country,” he noted.
In southern Haiti, two people were killed on Tuesday as security forces tried to lift a blockade of a road leading to an airport, a police official said, denying any responsibility for the deaths.
Police officers wounded four people who participated in the looting of the charity organization’s offices with bullets, the official acknowledged at the same time in a press conference he gave.
