The family of Halyna Hutchins a cinematographer who died after being shot by actor Alec Baldwin with a prop gun on the set of the film “Rust” in 2021, has vowed to continue fighting for justice after the wrongful death case against the star was dropped.
Last Friday (12), Baldwin, 66, could not hold back his tears when Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer ordered the closure of the criminal case against him. Baldwin’s defense alleged that the Public Prosecutor’s Office concealed crucial evidence regarding the death of the Ukrainian cinematographer, which led to the archiving.
Gloria Allred a lawyer representing Halyna’s parents and sister in a civil action against the artist, regretted the judge’s decision in the criminal sphere.
“The dismissal only strengthens our resolve to seek justice in the civil case we filed against him in Santa Fe, New Mexico,” Gloria told CBS News. “The news is devastating to the family in Ukraine who are grieving the loss of his life.” [de Halyna] every day.”
Gloria added that the family remains committed to holding Baldwin and the entire “Rust” production team accountable for their actions. She clarified that the ongoing civil case “is not affected by the court’s ruling on the criminal side.”
“Our case is important because we believe that everyone — yes, even celebrities like Alec Baldwin and producers — should follow the safety protocols in place so that all crew members can enjoy a safe working environment.”
With the dismissal of the case last week, Baldwin will no longer face criminal charges of wrongful death in Hutchins’ death, but he remains subject to civil action. The actor also previously requested the dismissal of the civil suit, which he described as “misguided,” arguing that Halyna’s parents and sister were estranged from the camerawoman “physically, financially and emotionally for years before her death” and therefore could not be the subject of “a right violation.”
The ongoing civil lawsuit does not include Halyna’s widower, Matthew Hutchins who decided not to pursue the wrongful death lawsuit after the first expert reports were released. At the time, Matthew stated that his wife’s death was the result of a “terrible accident” and added that he had “no intention of engaging in punishment or attribution of blame [aos produtores ou ao Sr. Baldwin]”.
