Hamas agreed with a new Egyptian proposal to free five hostages, including the American-Israeli Edan Alexander, in exchange for the resumption of ceasefire, a source of Hamas told Hamas to CNN .
The proposal is similar to one presented several weeks ago by the US special envoy Steve Witkoff, although it is unclear if it also includes the release of dead hostage bodies.
In exchange for the release of five hostages, Hamas expects a return to the conditions of Phase 1 of the ceasefire, including the entry of humanitarian aid, as well as an agreement to negotiate the second phase of ceasefire, the source said.
Israel responded to the Egyptian offer with a counterproposal, according to a statement from the Israeli Prime Minister’s office.
“Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu led a series of consultations yesterday, after a proposal received from the mediators. In recent hours, Israel transferred its counter-proposal to the mediators, in total coordination with the United States,” said the office.
Earlier this month, Israel renewed attacks on Gaza and imposed a complete blockade at the entrance of humanitarian aid in the enclave, warning that their forces will maintain a permanent presence in parts of Gaza until the release of the remaining 24 hostages are still believed to be alive.
