Hamas authority recognizes Sinwar’s death

A senior Hamas official, Basem Naim, acknowledged the death of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar this Friday (18), but insisted that the group would be “eventually victorious”.

The statement, which did not name Sinwar, said it was “painful and distressing to lose loved ones, especially extraordinary leaders like ours.”

Naim had earlier issued an almost identical statement naming Sinwar, but withdrew it soon after. In the second statement, Sinwar’s name was removed.

Naim said Hamas became “stronger and more popular” with each assassination of previous leaders.

“It appears that Israel believes that killing our leaders means the end of our movement and the struggle of the Palestinian people,” Qasem said in the revised statement. “Yes, it is very painful and distressing to lose loved ones, especially extraordinary leaders like ours, but what we are sure of is that we will eventually be victorious; This is the result for all the people who fought for their freedom.”
