Hamas said the peace proposal it received to end the conflict in Gaza does not correspond to the proposal presented by US President Joe Biden in a speech last week.
In a statement obtained by CNN Hamas said it welcomed what Biden exposed, but upon seeing the proposal “it ended up being devoid of the positive foundations contained in Biden’s statements”.
“It does not guarantee a permanent ceasefire, but a temporary one” and allows Israeli forces to remain in Gaza territory, the group states in the document.
On Monday, a spokesman for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Biden presented only a “partial” outline of the ceasefire agreement that was offered by Israel to Hamas.
Hamas said in the document that “there is no point in any agreement that does not explicitly stipulate a permanent ceasefire” or “allow occupying forces to remain on our lands.”
A CNN did not see the text of the latest proposal allegedly shared with Hamas.
Biden unveiled last Friday what he said was a three-phase Israeli proposal to end the conflict in Gaza, which would combine the release of hostages with a “total and complete ceasefire” and Israel’s withdrawal from “all populated areas of Gaza.”
Since then, Netanyahu has repeatedly stressed that the conditions for ending the country’s war in Gaza have not changed, including the destruction of Hamas and the return of all hostages.
