Hundreds of people attended the funeral of its deputy leader today in Beirut HamasSaleh al-Aruri, and the two executives of the Palestinian Islamist organization who were killed from a blow attributed to Israel.
Saleh al-Arouri and six other Hamas members and officials were killed Tuesday night in a bombing of Hamas offices in the southern suburbs of Beirut, an area that is a stronghold of Hezbollah.
The coffins of Aruri, Azal al-Aqra, from the leaders of the military wing of Hamas, the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades and Mohammad al-Rais, a leader of the movement, were, as APE-MPE reports, wrapped in Palestinian flags and Hamas banners. A machine gun was placed on each of them during prayers at a mosque in a popular district of Beirut, an AFP journalist reported.
The funeral procession, to the sound of gunfire, then headed to the Shatila refugee camp, where the three men will be buried.
Call for bombing of Tel Aviv by funeral participants
Participants chanted “Allah Akbar” (“God is great”) and repeated the slogan “Abu Obeidah, bombed Tel Aviv”, addressing the spokesman for Hamas's military wing in Gaza, who has become famous for the iconic headscarf he wears in public appearances.
“Killing Saleh al-Aruri or any other Palestinian is a misguided action because the resistance will produce new leaders,” a 35-year-old Palestinian, Omar Ghannoum, told AFP. He said he went to the funeral “to denounce the genocide being committed in Gaza and the violation of Lebanon's national sovereignty by the Israeli army.”
Many exiled Hamas operatives have settled in Lebanon, under the protection of Hezbollah. Israel vowed to “destroy” Hamas after the Palestinian group's Oct. 7 attack on Israeli soil killed an estimated 1,140 people.
The war that started in Gaza soon after it has claimed the lives of more than 22,000 peopleaccording to Hamas.
Israel has not claimed responsibility for the strike in the suburbs of Beirut, but a US official said yesterday, Wednesday, that it was indeed an “Israeli strike”.
