Hamas expresses concern after Iranian president's helicopter crashes

Hamas issued a statement expressing “great concern” after a helicopter carrying Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and other Iranian officials crashed this Sunday (19).

Details about the accident are still unknown. In the statement, Hamas expressed “solidarity” with the president and the “fraternal Iranian people”.

“In this painful incident, we express our full solidarity with the Islamic Republic of Iran, its leadership, government and people, and ask Almighty Allah to protect and ensure the safety of the Iranian President and his accompanying delegation, and that keeps all evil away from the fraternal Iranian people”, says the group’s statement.

Tensions continue across the Middle East as Israel wages war in Gaza against Hamas, which is an ally of Iran.

Amid the war in Gaza, Iran launched an unprecedented attack against Israel.

Tehran said the offensive was in retaliation for an alleged Israeli airstrike on Iran's consulate in Syria. The exchange only further inflamed tensions in the Middle East.

Iranian-funded groups – including the Houthis in Yemen and Hezbollah in Lebanon – have also been involved in escalating conflicts in the region.
