Hamas official says group has not received new ceasefire proposal

Hamas has not yet received any new official proposals on a ceasefire deal in exchange for hostages, a senior official from the Palestinian group told Reuters on Wednesday (4).

Izzat Al Risheq also spoke out about the deaths of the six hostages whose bodies were recovered by Israeli troops over the weekend, saying Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu “bears full responsibility” for their deaths.

The statement comes on the same day that the UN Security Council will discuss the issue of hostages held by Hamas in Gaza.

Netanyahu said on Monday (2) that Israeli troops remaining in the Philadelphia corridor, in the extreme south of the Gaza Strip, are one of the main points of contention preventing an agreement to end the fighting and return the hostages.

Hamas says it wants a deal to end the war and withdraw Israeli forces from the entire Gaza Strip, but this condition, among others, would prevent a deal. Netanyahu says the war can only end when Hamas is eradicated.

The United States and its allies have been working hard to negotiate a ceasefire-hostage deal to end, at least temporarily, the Gaza conflict in exchange for the release of sick, elderly and injured hostages.

Mediation efforts – led by the US, Egypt and Qatar – have yet to produce an agreement between Israel and Hamas.
