Ismail Haniyeh will be buried in the Qatari capital Doha on Friday (2) after the Hamas political leader was assassinated in Iran, the militant group said in a statement.
A funeral procession will be held in the Iranian capital Tehran on Thursday (1st), where state-affiliated media reported three days of public mourning.
Haniyeh’s body will then be transferred to Doha. Members of the public, Arab and Islamic leaders will attend the funeral, according to Hamas.
Ties with Qatar
In recent years, Haniyeh has lived in exile in Doha, which houses Hamas’s main political office. His assassination has raised concerns about the progress of negotiations, in which he was a key player.
Qatari authorities were coordinating with Washington and Egypt to secure a deal for the release of hostages and a ceasefire in Gaza.
