Hamas says ceasefire negotiations in Gaza are back to square one

Hamas said this Friday (10) that negotiations for a ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip were back to square one, after Israel effectively rejected a proposal from international mediators.

The armed group said in a statement that it would hold consultations with Palestinian factions to review its strategy in ceasefire negotiations.

The UN had warned hours earlier that the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza could end up being interrupted in the next few days, after Israel took control of the Palestinian side of the Rafah crossing this week.

This is a vital route for the passage of supplies into Palestinian territory.

Despite firm pressure from the United States, Israel said it will press ahead with an attack on the southern Gaza city of Rafah, where more than 1 million displaced people have sought refuge and, according to Israeli forces, members of Hamas are hiding. .

Israeli tanks seized the main avenue dividing the eastern and western parts of Rafah on Friday, effectively surrounding the eastern part of the city.

Hamas agreed to the proposal; Israel rejected

Ceasefire negotiations in Cairo, the capital of Egypt, were interrupted on Thursday (9) without an agreement to stop the fighting and release the hostages.

Hamas stated that it had agreed at the beginning of the week to a proposal sent by mediators from Qatar and Egypt and that the text would have been accepted by Israel previously.

Israel said, in turn, that Hamas' proposal contains elements that it cannot accept.
