Four grandchildren of Hamas political bureau leader Ismail Haniyeh were killed in an Israeli airstrike in the Gaza Strip, according to a Hamas statement.
Initial reports suggested that three of his grandchildren were killed along with three of his children this Wednesday (10).
Hamas confirmed the names of Haniyeh's grandchildren as Mona, Amal, Khalid and Razan.
Haniyeh's relatives were killed near Al Shati, northwest of Gaza City.
“They stood united with their people in a trench, joining the procession of some 60 martyrs of the honored and heroic Haniyeh family and the convoys of martyrs of our righteous and steadfast people in the battle of Al-Aqsa,” Hamas said.
The Israel Defense Forces told CNN who are aware of allegations that other relatives of Haniyeh were injured, including a minor.
The IDF added that it had not verified this information.
Israeli airstrike kills three children of Hamas political leader in Gaza
Three sons of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh were killed in an Israeli airstrike in Gaza on Wednesday, with Haniyeh insisting the deaths would not affect ongoing talks on a deal.
Haniyeh, in a statement, said killing the leaders' children would only make Hamas “firmer in our principles and adherence to our land.”
“Anyone who thinks that by targeting my children during negotiations and before a deal is agreed upon will force Hamas to back down on its demands is delusional,” he added.
The Israeli military confirmed the execution of the attack, describing the men [filhos] as “three Hamas military agents who conducted terrorist activities in the central Gaza Strip.”
According to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and the Israel Security Agency (ISA), those killed were Amir Haniyeh, a cell commander in Hamas' military wing, and Hamas military operatives Mohammad Haniyeh and Hazem Haniyeh.
The three were killed when the vehicle they were driving was bombed in the Al Shati refugee camp, northwest of Gaza city, Hamas political leader Haniyeh told Al Jazeera.
The IDF told the CNN who are aware of allegations that other relatives of Haniyeh were injured, including a minor.
The Hamas-run government media office (GMO) said on Wednesday that the Haniyeh family was “carrying out social and family visits on the occasion of Eid al-Fitr” before their vehicle was hit.
Eid al-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan and is one of the most important holidays in the Islamic calendar.
