Hamas has announced that it will free the Israeli-American hostage Edan Alexander, which is being kept in the Gaza Strip. The armed group said it has been in contact with the United States in recent days and that action is part of the mediators’ efforts for a ceasefire.
“This reaffirms the readiness [do Hamas] To immediately start intensive negotiations and make serious efforts to reach a final agreement that end the war, implement a mutually agreed prisoner exchange and allow Gaza to be administered by an independent professional committee to ensure that calm and stability will be sustained for many years, and the reconstruction and the end of the blockade, ”says the Hamas note.
Alexander’s liberation, who believe to be the last surviving American hostage maintained by the Palestinian armed group, occurs before US President Donald Trump’s visit to the Middle East this week.
One source told the Reuters news agency pointed out that Alexander will probably be released on Tuesday (13).
Hamas’s exiled chief in Gaza, Khalil Al-Hayya, said in the note that efforts for the liberation to take place together by Qatar, Egypt and Türkiye.
There were no immediate comments from the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office about the announcement.
Hamas had released 38 hostages under a ceasefire began on January 19. In March, the Israeli army resumed its terrestrial and air offensive in Gaza, abandoning the ceasefire after the armed group rejecting proposals to extend the truce without ending the war.
Israeli authorities said the offensive will continue until the remaining 59 hostages are released and Gaza is demilitarized. Hamas insists that he will free the hostages only as part of an agreement to end the war and rejected the demands to testify the weapons.
The Palestinian group said it was willing to release all the remaining hostages captured on October 7, 2023 and to agree with a permanent ceasefire if Israel withdraws completely from Gaza.
