Hamas has warned that Israeli hostages held in the Gaza Strip will be returned “in coffins” if Israel tries to free them through military pressure.
A statement released by the armed group noted that its fighters guarding prisoners held in Palestinian territory have “new instructions” on how to deal with hostages if Israeli forces approach.
An illustrated poster was also released that apparently showed hostages being threatened at gunpoint.
“Netanyahu’s insistence on releasing the prisoners through military pressure instead of concluding an agreement will mean that they will return to their families in coffins and their families will have to choose whether they are dead or alive,” warned a statement by Abu Obaida, spokesman for Hamas’ military wing, the Al-Qassam Brigades, on Monday (2).
Hamas’ statement comes after Israel recovered six hostages from Gaza over the weekend.
An Israeli spokesman said on Sunday that the prisoners were “brutally murdered by Hamas terrorists” shortly before soldiers reached them.
On Monday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed retaliation and said Hamas would pay a “heavy price.”
