Hamas says no leader of the group targeted in Gaza attack

A Hamas official has refuted Israeli allegations that an airstrike that killed at least 71 Palestinians in a humanitarian zone in Gaza on Saturday (13) was targeting the group’s leaders.

Israel said the strike targeted Hamas military chief Mohammed Deif and Rafa Salama, the commander of Hamas’ Khan Yunis Brigade, describing them as two of the masterminds behind the Oct. 7 attack that sparked the nine-month war in Gaza.

Hamas said these allegations were false and intended to justify the attack.

“The truth is that these allegations are an attempt to cover up the scale of the crime and the scale of the massacre in order to try to justify such a massacre, even though reaching such a number of displaced people is not justified by anything,” Ezzat Al Racheq, a member of Hamas’ political bureau and the group’s media representative, told Reuters in Doha.

Deif has survived seven Israeli assassination attempts, most recently in 2021, and has topped Israel’s most wanted list for decades, blamed for the deaths of dozens of Israelis in suicide bombings.

Gaza’s Health Ministry said at least 71 Palestinians were killed in the attack and 289 were wounded, the deadliest toll in weeks.
