O assassination of Hamas political leaderIsmail Haniyeh, on Wednesday (31) “will not be in vain,” said Palestinian President Musa Abu Marzouk, a member of the political cabinet of the radical Islamic group, according to the state news agency WAFA.
Sami Abu Zuhri, a senior Hamas official, said the group was “ready to pay various prices.”
“We are engaged in an open war to liberate Jerusalem and we are ready to pay various prices.”
A former commander of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, Mohsen Rezaie, warned that Israel would “pay a heavy price” for the assassination of Haniyeh in Tehran, Iranian state media reported.
Hamas issued a statement shortly after saying Haniyeh was killed along with his bodyguard in a “Zionist attack” on his Tehran residence after he attended the inauguration of the new Iranian president.
A CNN contacted the Israeli military for comment on Hamas’ claim.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said hours later that Haniyeh was assassinated at around 2 a.m. local time on Wednesday, adding that he was staying at “a special residence for war veterans in northern Tehran.”
Palestinian and Islamist national factions called for a general strike and mass demonstrations following Haniyeh’s assassination.
