The US special envoy Steve Witkoff said on Sunday that Hamas is responsible for the new fighting in Gaza after rejecting efforts to move on with what had been an “acceptable agreement,” even though he said he would be open to new approaches.
“So this is Hamas’s fault. The United States are with Israel,” Witkoff commented to Fox News. “Hamas had all the opportunities to demilitate, to accept the bridge proposal,” he added.
After weeks of relative calm in the Gaza Strip, due to a ceasefire agreement reached in January, attempts to agree with an extension of combat stop stagnation and Israel resumed air attacks and mobilized land troops in areas throughout the track.
Palestinian health officials say hundreds of people have been killed in recent attacks.
Witkoff’s “Bridge” plan, presented in early March, aimed to extend the ceasefire until April, in addition to the holidays of Ramadan and Easter, to give time to negotiations on a permanent cessation of hostilities.
“We would be receptive to a contact from Hamas? Of course we would be – not different from the Russian conflict (in Ukraine). We want to end the killing, but we need to make it clear who the aggressor is here, and this is Hamas,” he said.
Israel launched its campaign in Gaza after Hamas attacked Israeli communities around the track on October 7, 2023, killing about 1,200 people, according to an Israeli count, and kidnapping 251 as hostages.
At least 50,021 Palestinians were killed and 113,274 injured since the beginning of the war, the Palestinian Ministry of Health reported in a statement.
