Handelsblatt: The new mutation brings concern for Greek tourism

Reportage on Greek tourism, which had a very successful season this year, but which is in danger of being overturned due to the new outbreak of the pandemic, the financial newspaper quotes Handelsblatt. The report attempts an account of this year’s tourist season, noting, among other things: “The Greek tourism industry hopes to take advantage of this year’s success. The comeback of Greek tourism exceeded all expectations. According to the Bank of Greece, 11.6 million foreign visitors came to country in the first nine months, almost 90% more than 2020, the first year of the coronavirus crisis. The n.1 tourist country was Germany with 2.1 million visitors (…) ”

But now there is renewed concern about whether the positive course of Greek tourism will continue next year. According to the report: “The biggest risk remains the coronavirus. Due to the latest developments in the field of cases, the demand has somewhat decreased at the moment, says Christoph Führer, CEO of the tourist group Leitner Reisen. But apart from the growing number “and the new variant of the virus that has emerged in South Africa is now causing uncertainty.”

FAZ: Better a poor horse than no horse at all

The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung published a comment on the public debate that has opened in Germany on whether or not vaccination is mandatory and the possibility of a new, general lockout due to the rapid rise in coronavirus cases.

Among other things, he observes: “Suddenly no one wants to rule anything out. The constant calls to limit contacts are correct, but one must not forget who is actually responsible for the situation in the hospitals: the deliberately unvaccinated. It was clear from the beginning that the vaccination did not protects against coronavirus infection or further transmission – it was just as clear that vaccinated people are well protected against serious coronavirus complications – and this must be taken into account in any call for a general illness (…) The risk is not the same everywhere (… Yes, physical integrity is a valuable asset (which can be reduced – it would also be good to focus on the physical and mental burden of nursing staff. No legal action is out of the question. Compulsory vaccination is, however, a milder measure than Lockdown and does not cause any greater ‘division’. the same care in the future, action must be taken now. ”
