On May 22, crypto enthusiasts around the world celebrate Bitcoin Pizza Day. 15 years ago, a well -known developer and early supporter of Bitcoin Lazlo Hanesh, perhaps for the first time used cryptocurrency as a means of payment.

History of the Bitcoin Pitza Day

Bitcoin Pizza Day is a comic holiday, which is celebrated by a crypto community annually. On May 22, 2010, the developer Lazlo Hanyecz decided to buy two large pizzas and pay for them in BTC.

The chronology of the events was as follows: on May 18, a programmer from Florida (USA) published an announcement on the Bitcointalk forum, in which he promised to pay 10,000 BTC to the one who orders him two pizzas.

The announcement contained some details. Firstly, Lazlo listed his wishes for the ingredients:

“I like things like onions, pepper, sausage, mushrooms, tomatoes, pepperoni and so on. Just standard things, without a strange fish filling or something like that. I also like ordinary cheese pizzas. ”

Secondly, the programmer added that he wants to get two pizzas so that he has a pizza that he can “eat the next morning.” Lazlo even added that it is not necessary to buy him pizza – you can cook it yourself and send it with delivery. The ultimate goal was precisely in order to pay for her in bitcoins. The message ended with the words:

“If you are interested, please let me know, and we can agree. Thank you, Lazlo. ”

Interestingly, already in the first messages, people began to clarify in which country he lives. It turned out that Lazlo lives in the city of Jacksonville in Florida. Also in the first messages, users noticed that he could try to exchange his bitcoins for about $ 41 on special exchange services. There were those who wished him good luck in obtaining a “free” pizza.

From May 18 to 21, no one has never responded to the announcement, in connection with which Lazlo even published the following message:

“No one wants to buy me pizza? Is the amount in bitcoins that I propose too small? ”

Nevertheless, the seller was found in this story. They became Jeremy Sturdivant (Jeremy Sturdivant) – a 19 -year -old crypto enthusiast who ordered Khanish two pizzas on the Papa John’s network. Lazlo, in turn, restrained the word and translated 10,000 BTC to the rod. This transaction can be found in the Bitcoin blockchain:

At the current exchange rate, the purchase of two PICs cost Lazlo in more than one billion dollars, namely $ 1 093 515 600. It is interesting that the only commission for the transfer of this amount at the current exchange rate exceeds $ 108,000.

What Lazlo Hanesh is known

Contrary to a common misconception, Lazlo Hanesh is not just a person who randomly received his bitcoins and bought pizza for them. In fact, he was one of the first developers who took part in the development of bitcoin. Lazlo personally corresponded with Satoshi Nakamoto at the Bitcointalk forum on certain technical issues.

In addition, he adapted the source code of the early bitcoin client (which then became known as Bitcoin Core) for the MacOS operating system. The early version, presented by Satoshi Nakamoto himself, supported only the Windows operating system. That is, it was thanks to Lazlo Bitcoin in his early years who received support on many devices.

Finally, it was Lazlo who began to minute bitcoins not with the help of CPU, as was customary before him, but with the help of GPU. Thus, he laid the foundation for the “arms race” in mining. Subsequently, the development of specialized devices for mining will lead to the creation of ASIC.

Interestingly, Satoshi himself Nakamoto expressed concern about the “premature” increase in interest in the GPU. He noted on the forum:

“We should conclude a gentleman’s agreement to postpone the GPU arms race for as long as possible – for the good of the network. It is much easier to introduce new users with bitcoin if they do not need to worry about drivers and compatibility. It is nice that anyone who has only CPU can now compete on Bitcoin on an equal footing. ”

However, this does not mean that Satoshi was against GPU as a mining. According to Lazlo, after he wrote a code for mining on the GPU and shared it from Satoshi, the creator of Bitcoin shared his version of the code in response. Probably, Satoshi simply wanted more people to have an equal opportunity to get the first coins longer.

Bitcoin as a payment tool

Be that as it may, it is the purchase of two PICs on May 22, 2010 that the first transaction in history for the acquisition of goods in the real world for bitcoins in history. Over the years, the BTC course, of course, has grown a lot, but the climbing itself, as he repeatedly noticed in an interview, does not regret anything.

Discussions are still underway in the crypto community – whether this was really the first deal in history using bitcoin. Some recall another interesting case that occurred just a few months before the announcement of the lazlo.

The user of the forum with the nickname Sabunir published an announcement in which he wrote that he was ready to “give a chance to Bitcoin.” He put up a picture for sale – wallpaper on the computer desktop with a resolution of 1280 × 960 for his authorship. The picture was allegedly sold for a symbolic $ 1 or 500 BTC at that time. Years later, if such a deal was really carried out, then 500 BTC can be estimated at more than $ 54 million.

Conclusion

Lazlo Hanesh is a developer who influenced the development of bitcoin, its distribution in the first years, not only from the technical side, but also as a means of payment. Since the BTC in those years has not yet been traded massively on cryptocurrencies, it was difficult to assess the cost of such “virtual coins” in their dollar equivalent. But it was precisely such cases that they popularized the first cryptocurrency. Thanks to Lazlo Hanesh, we clearly see how the value of bitcoin over 15 years has changed.
