“Harbin”: Korean stars drag fans to Toronto premiere of film

Dozens of movie fans waited for hours outside the “Harbin” premieres at the Toronto Film Festival in Canada, on Sunday (8), hoping to see Lee Dong-Wook and Hyun Bin . The South Korean stars acted together for the first time in the film, which is a historical drama.

Fans’ patience was rewarded with red carpet appearances from both actors.

“This is my first time here, and I’m very grateful and happy to see my fans here,” Lee said. This is also the first time the Toronto film festival has screened a film featuring the actor, who is perhaps best known for his hit drama “My Girl.”

“Harbin” is about a small but courageous resistance army that fought to liberate Korea from oppressive Japanese rule in the early 20th century. The struggle takes the freedom fighters to the city of Harbin in China’s frozen northeast, where they carry out a plot to assassinate Japan’s prime minister.

“Harbin” is directed by Woo Min-ho, whose credits include “The Man Standing Next,” which South Korea has submitted for Best International Feature Film at the 2021 Oscars.

Outside the Toronto screening, a 26-year-old fan named Angelah said she grew up watching Korean dramas and was influenced by Korean films, K-pop and Korean culture. For her, seeing the actors at the festival made her realize how far these cultural influences have come. “Seeing both of them go from the screen to an in-person event here in Toronto is especially exciting for me. Art is truly limitless, breaking down barriers and creating connections between people no matter where they are from,” she said.
