The Group of the European People’s Party (EPP) strongly condemns the Russian attack on Ukraine, “which is a clear violation of international law, in particular the Charter of the United Nations and the Helsinki Final Act.”
“We call on President Vladimir Putin to immediately and unconditionally stop all acts of aggression and to withdraw all military equipment, personnel and troops from the territory of Ukraine, including Crimea and eastern Ukraine,” the EPP said in a statement.
“Recognition of the two separatist territories in Ukraine is a blatant violation of international law, Ukraine’s territorial integrity and the Minsk agreements. This unilateral escalation of the conflict will lead to Russian military occupation of Donetsk and Lukashenko. “A new package of sanctions must be adopted with the aim of phasing out Russia from the European economy without compromise. We expect the Council to act quickly on this,” he said.
As for Ukraine, it points out that “the full range of military support from NATO and EU partners must be on the table.”
EPP Group Chairman Manfred Weber said: “The EU geopolitical holiday is over. Faced with war in Europe, the importance of a functioning foreign and security policy is an existential urgent need to ensure our sovereignty and our way of life “.
