Undersecretary of Defense Nikos Hardalias in his speech described the Russian invasion of Ukraine as unprecedented and said that the mosaic of Europe was created in the midst of stability, while emphasizing that good intentions and diplomacy are not always enough to repel the wrongdoers. Sometimes they become a sign of weakness and prove to be insufficient, said Mr. Hardalias and added that the same does not apply to Greece “since we have learned to fight for our existence and our freedom”.
He also said that Greece’s borders are identified with the EU and that our country is the last outpost of the West to the east. He referred to the possibilities of strengthening the deterrent capacity and spoke of two axes: first, the creation of a diplomatic and military edifice to convince any third party working to infringe on foreign sovereign rights that threats would be repulsed, and second, the strategic communication of this determination to or not.
Mr. Hardalias also noted that our defense is an absolute end in itself and characterized the upgrading of the national defense industry as of utmost importance.
