Meeting your heroes often disappoints. This time no: Harry Potter 20th anniversary: return to Hogwarts (from 1 January on Sky and NOW) is a happy exception to this rule. Sure, this is a virtual date, but the vibes are absolutely authentic.
The cast reunion to celebrate the # 20YearsOfMovieMagic from the first movie, The philosopher’s Stone, it couldn’t have been better than this, not even under spell. Why, as Headmaster Albus Dumbledore says, not even magic can do nothing against death: Some might argue that if some of the cast members were alive (Alan Rickman / Severus Snape in the first place) it would have been better. Yet if there is a lesson that the wizard saga has taught, it is precisely this: there is no wand that is able to erase pain and loss, because it makes us human.
Here, then, that this tribute to literary saga by JK Rowling (published in Italy by Salani and in an audio book version by Audible) has truly accomplished a miracle, giving a worthy greeting to those who have brought the writer’s vision to the big screen. His presence at the reunion had been announced: technically it is true, but he appears with repertoire material from a 2019 interview, so he does not physically share the scene with the others, who instead really gathered in the studios outside London where the resumed. Today those places are partly a park-sanctuary (Warner Bros. Studio Tour London – The Making of Harry Potter), which preserves the original sets with costumes, props and curiosities about the eight films taken from the seven books. Just to know, i prequel Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (the third film arrives in theaters on April 13, Dumbledore’s Secrets) they are still shot here. But back to Rowling: she is in fact the big absentee at this gigantic celebratory party, as many fans had feared. The most likely hypothesis concerns the writer’s controversial statements and her alleged transphobia. Apart from this one mole – if we can really talk about mole – this reunion condenses this twenty-year cinematic journey into almost two hours in a sublime and poignant (but never rhetorical) way.
Prepare the handkerchiefs, because already the theme song, which sorts the cast in the various houses – with the background music of the Hogwarts theme – has something fantastically sublime. The trio Daniel Radcliffe (Harry) – Rupert Grint (Ron) and Emma Watson (Hermione) are joined by the four directors of the saga (Chris Columbus, Alfonso Cuarón, Mike Newell and David Yates), producer David Heyman and the cast: Helena Bonham Carter (Bellatrix), Robbie Coltrane (Hagrid), Ralph Fiennes (Lord Voldemort), Jason Isaacs (Lucius Malfoy), Gary Oldman (Sirius), Toby Jones (the voice of the elf Dobby), Tom Felton (Draco), James Phelps and Oliver Phelps (twins Fred and George), Mark Williams (Arthur Weasley), Bonnie Wright (Ginny), Alfred Enoch (Dean), Matthew Lewis (Neville), Evanna Lynch (Luna) and Ian Hart (Professor Raptor).
