Harry tells of the physical fight he had with William: “He grabbed me by the neck and pushed me to the ground”

A few days after the release of Shootthe memoir of Prince Harry, the first advances are released on what will be told of the book. One of the more controversial passages was shared by the Guardian which reported part of a chapter in which the Duke of Sussex tells of a physical fight that took place with his brother in 2019 at his home in Kensington Palace, the famous cottage located in the garden of the property known as “Nott Cott”. The quarrel was preceded by a phone call from William asking Harry for a comparison for discuss the current situation and the attacks received by the media. The second son of Carlo and Diana also recalls how his brother had arrived home already visibly nervous, suggesting that everything could have gotten worse at any moment.

And it went exactly as planned. In Harry’s words, the prince of Wales would have started the conversation by attacking Meghan, calling her a “difficult, rude and intractable” person. The brother replied by saying that he was repeating, without a minimum of knowledge, what was told by the media and that he expected something better from him. It was at that moment that the quarrel started towards a point of no return: first the two started yelling at each other and insulting each otherthen Harry walked away from William trying to calm things down, but to no avail because the heir to the throne grabbed him by the neck, so much to tear off the necklace he was wearing, finally pushed him, making him fall to the ground on the dog’s bowl which, on impact, broke, injuring him and causing him some cuts and grazes. Harry, despite his brother encouraging him to react «like we did when we were children», she ended the argument by asking him out of her house.

The quarrel also had aftermath in the following days. In the book it says that William was dismayed by what happened, but did not regret it because he didn’t consider himself responsible at all for the fight and told Harry that “there was no need to tell Meghan everything”. At first, the brother accepted the request and confided only in his therapist, but was forced to tell the truth when his wife noticed the bruises and scratches on his neck and back. “She was terribly sad – she wrote in the book – but not at all surprised or angry”. It is therefore implied that Markle expected a similar escalation, after months in which anger and tension between the couple and the royal family were smouldering.

The relationship between the two brothers, after that quarrel, broke down definitively and, in the years since, there has been no way to fix it, despite pressure from King Charles. At the beginning of ShootHarry reports a dialogue he had with his father and William shortly after Prince Philip’s funeral in 2021. «Looking at our flushed faces, he said to us: ‘Please guys, don’t make my last years of life a suffering’». We don’t know if this appeal was immediately accepted, but the last interview with the Duke of Sussex – in which he claims to “want his father and brother back” – could be a first step in this direction.
