Harvard researchers may have found the “key” to treat Alzheimer’s disease

In an important new discovery, researchers at the Harvard Medical School say they have found the “key” that can solve many of the mysteries of Alzheimer’s disease and the aging of the brain, which is nothing more than the humble metal lithium. Lithium is known in medicine as a mood stabilizer given to people suffering from bipolar disorder and depression. It was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1970, but was used by doctors to treat mood disorders for almost a century before it. Now, for the first time, researchers have shown that lithium is naturally present in small quantities and that cells need it to function normally – such as vitamin C or iron.
