Hasselblad XPan 65:24 aspect ratio added to OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro smartphones

OnePlus has begun rolling out update 11.2.9.9 for the OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro, which adds a new camera mode called XPan. This is a reference to the Hasselblad XPan, an updated version of the Fuji TX-1 dual format camera released in the late 90s. In addition to shooting on 35mm film, this camera can also shoot in 65mm format for panoramas with an aspect ratio of 65:24 (or 2.7: 1).

XPan Mode in the OnePlus 9 series offers a new interface with a 65:24 aspect ratio viewfinder and limited controls. You have three options. You can switch between two color modes: a slightly modified natural color preset and a default black and white mode based on Ilford Delta 400 film. You can also switch the focal length from 45mm to a wider 30mm, which will switch to an ultra wide angle lens. Finally, you can also control the exposure.

The 65:24 aspect ratio on these phones cannot be recreated natively and the images are cropped. This is a bit ironic, as the main feature of the original XPan was that it created panoramas by actually increasing the field of view rather than clipping or masking the standard one.

Images are also saved at 20 megapixels. The resolution in 45 mm mode is 7872 x 2916 megapixels, and the resolution in 30 mm mode is 7552 x 2798 megapixels. In this case, after you have taken a picture, the screen becomes dark for a few seconds. This “reproduces the ritual meaning of the manifestation of the film.”

OnePlus is also offering some camera performance improvements in this update. Changes have been made to HDR processing, image sharpness, white balance, night landscape exposure, and dynamic range in low light.

Finally, the update also brings the September security patch to the phone.
