For all those who would like to enjoy the paradisiacal setting of Hawaii, with its beaches and coconut palms, a strict health protocol must be observed. Very strict. As our colleagues from France Inter report, the archipelago has imposed drastic measures on travelers from abroad, to prevent the arrival of cases of Covid-19 on its soil. Even after a negative test, newcomers must, since December 1, submit to a quarantine. And on the island of Kauai, they are also forced to wear an electronic bracelet.
Each tourist equipped with this bracelet is confined in a “bubble resort”, translated by France Inter as “bubble hotel”. As explained by French radio, it is strictly forbidden to leave the premises of the establishment, even to go sunbathe on a nearby beach. The most reckless who would try to defy this confinement risk having to pay a fine of several thousand dollars. One year in prison could also be added to this heavy financial penalty. Questioned by France Inter, a couple of vacationers explained that a signal is emitted by the electronic bracelet as soon as its wearer leaves the quarantine zone. “Every day we must also inform the local county that we are still well confined”, add the two tourists.
An archipelago less affected than the mainland
Hawaii is one of the US states least affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, with more than 19,000 cases and 269 deaths for 1.4 million people. The island of Kauai, which requires the wearing of the electronic bracelet to travelers from abroad, has even recorded only 126 cases of Covid-19 and one death for 70,000 inhabitants, underlines France Inter. Far from the dramatic figures of the epidemic in the whole of the United States (more than 16 million cases and nearly 300,000 deaths for 328 million inhabitants).
But the economy of Hawaii, very dependent on tourism, is stifled by the health crisis. To compensate for the lack of vacationers, businessmen and officials of the archipelago have launched a program aimed at attracting Americans who telework. The plane ticket to the island of Oahu, where the capital Honolulu is located, is offered as part of this initiative.
