A woman broke into his apartment Robert De Niro on New York’s Upper East Side early this morning and tried to steal the presents placed under the actor’s Christmas tree, according to police imgs and local media.
Officers saw the woman enter the basement of the building, on East 65th Street, around 2:45 a.m. and they found that he had broken into the house, said Arthur Chui, a spokesman for the New York Police Department. The 30-year-old was known to the authorities from her previous arrests for burglary and the officers caught her red-handed in the apartment stealing, he added.
According to ABC News, the woman was putting the presents under the Christmas tree in a bag. De Niro, 79, was at homeheard the commotion and went down to the place where the tree was.
The woman has been taken into custody and is expected to be charged. A spokesman for the Manhattan district attorney’s office said he will likely be arraigned later today or early tomorrow morning. It is currently unclear if he is represented by a lawyeras relayed by the Athens News Agency.
Stan Rosenfield, a representative for De Niro, said he had no comment on the case other than that the break-in took place at a home the star is temporarily renting.
